Colombia Reconsiders Repatriation of Citizens After Rejecting U.S. Flights

President Trump outlined consequences for that country if it continued to refuse repatriation.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro prohibited two U.S. military flights from landing to deport illegal immigrants from his country over the weekend.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that President Petro had “authorized flights and provided all needed authorizations and then canceled his authorization when the planes were in the air.”

President Donald Trump responded with an outline of the trade and diplomatic measures the U.S. would take if Colombia refused to comply with the effort to return their citizens. The U.S. president announced emergency tariffs on all Colombian goods, a travel ban and visa revocation for Colombian government officials, enhanced Customs and Border Protection inspections for all Colombians and their goods, and sanctions.

The Colombian president stated a short time later that a presidential plane would be sent to repatriate his citizens. He said that he rejected the U.S. military flights because the illegal immigrants were being treated as criminals. President Petro stated, “The United States must establish a protocol for the dignified treatment of migrants before we receive them.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For President Trump and administration officials as they implement immigration policy.
  • For discernment for Secretary of State Rubio as he oversees diplomatic efforts.
